When I first moved to this city, I nearly got in multiple accidents because I followed the designations for “In” and “Out” driveways. Apparently those are incorrect, and I was supposed to do the opposite...
I think this roundabout is in a similar city. There’s a learning curve, but it really keeps traffic flowing when you get it down.

Wrong, the proper way is sideways with full opposite lock.

I know where that is. (The Town)There are a couple in Sacramento also.

I have to drive through this twice a day. Roundabouts aren’t difficult. People are difficult.

They just put three roundabouts in my town where there was an awful gross mess of traffic signals before. Now for me it’s awesome, I fly right through it, but the stupidity I’ve seen there is off the charts.

THERES NOTHING NEW TO LEARN!
if you took a roundabout and straightened it out, it’s simple.
the roundabout is the main road, you are attempting to enter onto that road in a T intersection manner and you are in the yielding side of the T.

That truck at 1:08... Was he using the turn lane to swing wide and avoid dragging the rear end of the truck over the island? Also, is the edge of that island meant to be a sidewalk, or is it an apron specifically made for long trucks to be able to make the turn?
![]() 07/19/2017 at 11:04 |

yeah, I thought the same for the truck. trucks will often inhabit an extra lane or so for turns to avoid damage, so I’ll let his actions slide.

In their defense, maybe they aren’t used to the concept of a circle?
Or maybe they’re just confused about how they work?
Take this set of circles here. The one on the left, the people in the circle have the right of way. The one on the right, the people in the circle have to yield.
Um, what? Who thought this was a good idea?!
![]() 07/19/2017 at 11:10 |

Aha! I found a diagram that calls that part a “truck apron” (also known as a “ slip lane ”). Also note in the video the shallow curbing of the apron...
In that case, I guess I’ll side with Mr. Roberts here. The truck driver isn’t recognizing that this roundabout is actually designed to accommodate large vehicles like that.

sure, it might well be designed to handle it, but if every other corner the truck encountered in a day wasn’t designed for them you could understand that one small demographic of the driving public intentionally using this intersection incorrectly out of an abundance of caution.

I love the timid slow no spatial awareness MB W212 (luxury trim with lighting package, uncommon), I’ve seen that driver in Bellevue, but they were in a Lexus RX.
I ike local roundabouts, I see how much bodyroll I can generate in a short period.

unless their is signage in the circle on the right indicating that the people within the circle must give way then I propose that you are incorrect.

At least it’s a real roundabout and not one of those around New Jersey with traffic lights or yields IN THE CIRCLE.
This is the redesigned Flemington circle. The engineers left the one yield in place (bottom right of the circle). This is still tons better than the Marlton circle, which fortunately doesn’t exist anymore.

I flew through one the other day in a manner the wife did not approve of, I got a “look”, I of course covered it by quickly jiggling the wheel some more on the now straight road and pronouncing “yeah, I like your new CR-V, handles better than your RAV4"

yes, this example you provide, and of course britain’s infamous roundabouts in roundabouts in roundabouts (yo we heard you like roundabouts) are terrible examples of complex solutions to simple problems.

I didn’t believe it either, but sure enough - there are yield signs in one roundabout:
and entering the other one:

oh dear lord.
are green lights stop and red lights go in this dumb ass town!?

Nope, signage and everything. It’s been this way forever, too. Makes no damn sense.

it’s handy, what with the extra time you’ll need to pause and decipher which way 130, 57, 551 or 551 (again) is

Nope, that’s just New Jersey. It’s reasons like this that the state has been doing away with circles for years. There’s no uniformity.
![]() 07/19/2017 at 11:29 |

That is weird! I zoomed in on the overhead view, and looking at the triangle “give way” markings on the road surface, it looks like the two northern roadways have to yield to the roundabout, but the ones on the south side get to have the roundabout traffic yield. So, it’s a little of both? Who designed this?
![]() 07/19/2017 at 11:31 |

well now, this is the FIRST time I’ve heard of a reason to say New Jersey sucks. How odd that something so stupid would be found in such a place praised for being excellent in all other ways.

EDIT: I meant to reply to the original post. Oops.
There’s one particular roundabout I use everyday which is two lanes wide: you use the inside lane to take the last exit out of the circle, and the outer lane to make an immediate right turn out of the circle or keep going straight through.
Most people seem to understand this, but you occasionally get clueless people who proceed into the roundabout using the outer lane, then cut into the inner lane so that they can take the last exit out of the circle. The number of close calls I’ve had is too many, and people’s understanding of yielding seems to completely fall apart at times, too.

We are fairly near the triple roundabout complex King County put in at the Hollywood school house/winery district. Honestly, I was sure they were going to result in chaos. But to my surprise, most folks seem to get through them ok. I think they force people to pay attention - they are just complicated enough for folks to look up and turn their brain on instead of remaining toddling along on auto pilot.

There’s one somewhere in Sammamish—somewhere off 228th if I recall correctly—with stop signs at each entrance. I couldn’t believe it...
![]() 07/19/2017 at 22:31 |

Never seen that one. I know there’s one kind of on the Issaquah - Sammamish border, no stop signs there. There’s one at the entrance to Hunt’s Point/Clyde Hill and another near at Yarrow Point/Clyde Hill, those can be fun to zip through.

I’ve been meaning to drive to Clyde’s Hill to find the 520 bridge bike path entrance. I’ll be sure to go through the roundabouts a few times!

I am sure it’s a nice ride - I like to take my old car out for drives in those areas, less traffic.
